@muscles Absolutely not. According to Ey'bl we've got visitors incoming.

@jandrews Reporting for duty.

Can I leave the brig now?

Some days, you get a bunch of new crewmates.

Some days, you lose a bunch of new crewmates.

At least, this time, everyone seems happy about it.

The Silent Helper robot came just as the communication array came back online, as if they knew a space station that could now be heard would work better with more habitats for more people drawn to it.

I don't know how that happens.

Walking past engineering earlier when Birmingham excitedly poked his head out and pulled me in. Not unusual–he loves showing off his latest "Wayback" finds.

What was unusual was the horrible shrieking. An awful metallic scraping sound, like the entire engine was in catastrophic failure.

Which, okay, it's the Ghost. That wouldn't even be that weird.

But he was SO excited. Alarming, but normal for him.

So I went in.

The entire engineering rotation was on a makeshift stage. Covered in black and white facepaint, wearing studded boots. One kept shouting "I wanna roll rocks at night!" The stage was on fire.

Birmingham gave me a second to take it in, then said, very earnestly, "Isn't this exciting?"

I couldn't disagree. I didn't feel good, but my fight-or-flight was on high alert. I think that's 'excited'.

@faehnrich I did unearth an article from the partial backup of the Solarica. https://intergalactic.computer/social/solarica/silent-helpers/

It's not exactly enlightening, but it might be useful?

The captain tells me that Azure was last on the ship 8 standard years ago, so it's clearly not the most up to date article.

@faehnrich I know what you mean. One day, I'm just some dude joining the space corps. The next day I'm personally responsible for what's left of the Encyclopedia Solarica.
It seems we woke up someone else who was trying to sleep. When they radioed us to stop, the Silent Helper said sorry but asked if they can check up on the poor human who seems only capable of communicating with terrible rhythm.

I found an old copy of the software that powered the Encyclopedia Solarica, before the Solar Guard decided that access to that kind of knowledge was likely to stir up trouble.

I’m still trying to decrypt and import all the historical articles from the last good export I found, but it’s going to take a while.

In the meantime, y’all remember how the Solarica worked. Make some articles, tell your own stories.

There aren't any more archivists, there's just Me, so I'll appreciate any help you can give me.

@faehnrich have you tried talking to them? A lot of the helpers can process speech. Some of them even fit voice boxes to respond.

Unfortunately, at least as far as I'm aware, if they haven't interacted with humans before ... Well it can be a journey to reach understanding.
