Can I leave the brig now?

Some days, you get a bunch of new crewmates.

Some days, you lose a bunch of new crewmates.

At least, this time, everyone seems happy about it.

The Silent Helper robot came just as the communication array came back online, as if they knew a space station that could now be heard would work better with more habitats for more people drawn to it.

I don't know how that happens.

Walking past engineering earlier when Birmingham excitedly poked his head out and pulled me in. Not unusual–he loves showing off his latest "Wayback" finds.

What was unusual was the horrible shrieking. An awful metallic scraping sound, like the entire engine was in catastrophic failure.

Which, okay, it's the Ghost. That wouldn't even be that weird.

But he was SO excited. Alarming, but normal for him.

So I went in.

The entire engineering rotation was on a makeshift stage. Covered in black and white facepaint, wearing studded boots. One kept shouting "I wanna roll rocks at night!" The stage was on fire.

Birmingham gave me a second to take it in, then said, very earnestly, "Isn't this exciting?"

I couldn't disagree. I didn't feel good, but my fight-or-flight was on high alert. I think that's 'excited'.

It seems we woke up someone else who was trying to sleep. When they radioed us to stop, the Silent Helper said sorry but asked if they can check up on the poor human who seems only capable of communicating with terrible rhythm.

I found an old copy of the software that powered the Encyclopedia Solarica, before the Solar Guard decided that access to that kind of knowledge was likely to stir up trouble.

I’m still trying to decrypt and import all the historical articles from the last good export I found, but it’s going to take a while.

In the meantime, y’all remember how the Solarica worked. Make some articles, tell your own stories.

There aren't any more archivists, there's just Me, so I'll appreciate any help you can give me.

Intergalactic Social
Oh, as the de facto communications guy (the one annoyed enough to reconnect the network), I should probably put out a station greeting.

Greetings from Gravity's Lament! We're a space station/colony/settlement that started out as derelict and decommissioned ships glommed together, then anyone else that wanted to attach their ship to all the others.

All we ask is if you dock (regardless of how long), please TURN OFF YOUR GRAVITY FIELD.

No other ships have theirs on to counteract yours if they're in range. We can't have that many ships with gravity fields this close together, it would wreak havoc (hence our name).
The other side of being the one to take on work in a leaderless group, you're now "that person" that does that thing.

I know nothing about communications, now I'm the communications guy.

Until someone else gets annoyed enough at my patch job.
Having done this myself, I can now see the main driver behind someone taking initiative to start something on this station is to be annoyed enough to to do it.

People marvel at what we accomplished with a bunch of space junk that was coaxed into a space station, but it's done by a bunch of entities twitching with rage.
Now the real reason I got Gravity's Lament onto the intergalactic network.

Anyone have social transmission protocols for Silent Helper robots? One ended up floating by and decided to keep building habitats and I need to know how to nicely ask them to stop.

I keep getting lost in all the new tunnels and corridors someone please help me.
