Mastodon has reached the milestone of 10 million accounts! 🎉

10M Mastodon accounts is great, but what does that exactly measure? And according to whom? One side effect of being a decentralized network is that usage and activity is hard to measure. In this article I take a look at the different data sources that count Mastodon account numbers, and some of the open questions regarding which number is actually correct.

10 million Mastodon accounts

This Sunday marked a major milestone for Mastodon as it reached 10 million registered accounts. Milestones like this are important to acknowledge and celebrate, highlighting the growth of both Mastodon and the fediverse. But how reliable is this number actually?

On the "All Hands on Tech" podcast, Mat Pancha did a review of Mastodon.

It's seems like he's not a big fan.

Specifically, he doesn't like that Mastodon isn't conducive to passive zoning out. He wants a service you can use without thinking.

However, to me, the appeal of Mastodon (and the Fediverse) is that this is social media that requires you to turn on your brain.

Mastodon is a bicycle for your brain.

All Hands on Tech – Mastodon Review: The decentralized online communities platform | IT World Canada News

In today's episode, we're going to take a look at Mastodon, which is an open source, decentralized social media platform that allows you to connect with people from all over the world. Mastodon users can join servers, follow each other, engage in conversations, do all the things they'd expect to be able to do on

Once you go down the "passive consumption" route, social media stops being social.

Instead it becomes television. And television sucks.

It's a one way window where a talking head speaks to you -- but you can't speak back.

Why would anyone want this -- and pretend this is in any way "social"?

"Social" implies a two way conversation. If it's one way, the "social" is a facade.

One of my favorite animals is the very rare blanket octopus. Few people have seen them firsthand. https://youtu.be/QJcXMPJ9XN8

The female has a spectacular ‘cape’ enclosing her tentacles, making her look larger to predators. She can grow >6.5ft or 2m!

The male is smaller than a walnut. He weighs 40,000x less than the female measuring 2.4cm.

Blanket octopus are the most extreme example of female vs male size discrepancy across the (non-mircoscopic) animal kingdom. #nature #science #SharedPlanet

I'm usually hesitant to share too much about my son, Ripley, or his situation but our situation (US, WV/OH) changed last week. Ripley is about 18 months old and we've known since he was born that he would need a #KidneyTransplant once he was big enough. Until last week, our plan was for him to get one of mine. Unfortunately, I was disqualified, so we're on the hunt for a kidney! If you or someone you know would have any interest in being screened, you can visit https://ripley.love (1/2)

Mileva Marić Einstein was a physicist born in Serbia in 1875.

We remember her husband, Albert Einstein, as one of the most celebrated physicists of the 20th century, but I suspect most folks haven’t heard of her.

However, Albert & Mileva’s letters & other accounts suggest they worked together on his groundbreaking scientific contributions. They collaborated from the time they met in 1896 until their separation in 1914.

This is her story: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/the-forgotten-life-of-einsteins-first-wife/?fbclid=IwAR2O8bwlDiEBgJLYbjKo-Kdy_3jhi7tvyCl2edzpzpI_pIcPv7iVOc1zC-E #science #history #HistoryRemix
