@jen yeah, I also think the only way to get a feel for how features are used is to be on mastodon for a while, and then it's hard to tell how representative the default instance is

@mewo2 ah thanks - think I worried that if I moved to say, a gamedev instance, there'd be some expectation of the local tab there being largely gamedev stuff
maybe that's not how mastodon thinks about it though
on twitter i kinda post all over the place - hiking, knitting, queer stuff, video games, utter bullshit - and here it feels like a lot of instances cater to one of those things but then id be intruding/annoying with the rest?
instances/the fediverse make a lot of sense from a technical perspective but not much sense to me in terms of my identity/social circles/posting habits
if i move to a game dev instance am i committed to being a game dev forever
