Yee-haw, not no way, not no how, not in the middle of all dem pixelz.
At least by adding an Apple Pay Cash card and trying to charge that card even though it has a $0.00 balance, Apple knows that doing it that way will somehow never cause a free app “purchase” for an item that’s listed as “free” in an item file database so deeply held within the Apple universe to ever translate into any loss of gold for them.
Interesting to see if this will work again. Hopefully I won’t need to keep doing this as I continue working on my career, work and life.
I just left Apple Pay Cash active on my account. From here, if I want to download another app, I don’t know if I’ll need to remove and re-add the Apple Pay Cash card again for the Verification Required dialog to go away, or if the App Store is smart enough to know that it can download a free app using APPLE’S version of a “prepaid credit card number service.”

If you don’t have Apple Pay Cash active on your account, set that up. (If you already have it set up, that’s my secret and I don’t know if your results will vary since it was active already). If there is a zero balance on Apple Pay Cash, and you try to use it to complete this free app download, you’ll see red text that says “insufficient balance.” Don’t worry, just continue. That’s where my free app started downloading.
First, start by going to your app purchase history and scroll to the free app you want to install. Tap download. It will prompt “Verification Required,” tap continue. Proceed to the screen with your payment methods.
But here it is since I’m not that kind of person. Be warned though, I have no idea if this will work for everyone or ever stop working.
I just found a workaround for it. I’m so happy. I can download free apps now. I’m enjoying it so much that I don’t feel like sharing how to do it since I’ve struggled so long and it’s MY secret. >.>
