So that annoying thing that happens at Apple when a payment method fails multiple times on the App Store or iTunes…

…you know, that thing that happens after Apple has tried to charge the payment method multiple times and it fails each time…?

You…don’t…?…?!?

TOOOOOOOOOT!

Well if that ever happens, that particular payment method is prevented from being used, edited, altered, or re-tried again until a different payment method is added to the Apple ID.

Or, I’m guessing, Apple might also automatically keep trying to use the payment method until it’s successful again. 🤷‍♂️

That means you can go to the bank, deposit cash into the account, then re-try to finish the failed transaction, and Apple will still block that payment method until a different payment method is added. 👀
In the past, I could deposit money at the bank, tap “edit” on the card, provide the 3-digit security code from the payment card, and then the App Store would re-try the purchase. That doesn’t happen anymore. The option to edit card details is gone now, and the only thing that can be edited is the billing address.
Editing the address, then tapping “ok” or “update,” brings me right back to the “Verification Required” screen. I can tap “continue” and will end up at the same screen I just edited the billing information on. The only other thing I can do at that point is totally remove the payment method.
~*Big*~ problem with the second option is that if any subscriptions are active at all, or if there are any pending orders still unpaid, Apple will not allow the payment method to be removed. If you don’t have any subscriptions active, you are free to end the journey here and use your Apple account without a payment card added.
This makes things incredibly aggravating when I just need to install a free app from the App Store and am running on $0.00 for the week. It’s bothered me for years as I try to find stable and fulfilling non-paycheck-to-paycheck work that hasn’t been obliterated BY this device to begin with.
I just found a workaround for it. I’m so happy. I can download free apps now. I’m enjoying it so much that I don’t feel like sharing how to do it since I’ve struggled so long and it’s MY secret. >.>
But here it is since I’m not that kind of person. Be warned though, I have no idea if this will work for everyone or ever stop working.
First, start by going to your app purchase history and scroll to the free app you want to install. Tap download. It will prompt “Verification Required,” tap continue. Proceed to the screen with your payment methods.
If you don’t have Apple Pay Cash active on your account, set that up. (If you already have it set up, that’s my secret and I don’t know if your results will vary since it was active already). If there is a zero balance on Apple Pay Cash, and you try to use it to complete this free app download, you’ll see red text that says “insufficient balance.” Don’t worry, just continue. That’s where my free app started downloading.
Taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! ⭐️
Or should I say TOOOOOOOOOOOOT-TOOOOOOOOOOOO! 🐘

Interesting to see if this will work again. Hopefully I won’t need to keep doing this as I continue working on my career, work and life.

I just left Apple Pay Cash active on my account. From here, if I want to download another app, I don’t know if I’ll need to remove and re-add the Apple Pay Cash card again for the Verification Required dialog to go away, or if the App Store is smart enough to know that it can download a free app using APPLE’S version of a “prepaid credit card number service.”

At least by adding an Apple Pay Cash card and trying to charge that card even though it has a $0.00 balance, Apple knows that doing it that way will somehow never cause a free app “purchase” for an item that’s listed as “free” in an item file database so deeply held within the Apple universe to ever translate into any loss of gold for them.
Yee-haw, not no way, not no how, not in the middle of all dem pixelz.
