Exclusive: Twitter removes suicide prevention feature, says it's under revamp

Twitter Inc removed a feature in the past few days that promoted suicide prevention hotlines and other safety resources to users looking up certain content, according to two people familiar with the matter who said it was ordered by new owner Elon Musk.

If you can:

1. Donate to Fediverse devs and intance admins
2. Start your own instances
3. If you can't start your own instances, join a non-profit or co-op instance
4. If you can't join a non-profit or co-op instance, support small businesses that are building the Fediverse
5. Resist the likes of Google or Apple from extending their tech monopolies into the Fediverse

So @.joinmastodon got unbanned from Twitter.

This is the first tweet that they sent after the unbanning:

"As a company from eastern Germany, we know that building a wall to try and keep people from leaving isn't a good idea."

What a response!

For the past 15 years, Big Social has been selling us a lie: that everything should be integrated into their apps, and you should *never* leave.

The result has been a blander and blander Internet.

And it's built on an ecosystem where attention is inventory.

This is why the likes of Meta and Twitter reject ActivityPub -- because the business case wrests on them selling your attention.

But not every social media site needs to do this. Certainly, not most of them.

My biggest frustration with Big Social was the sense that eventually, I wasn't writing to express myself, nor was I writing to talk to people.

I was writing to impress an algorithm.

I didn't intend on impressing an algorithm. I never wanted to do that. But unconsciously, that happened as I continued to use Big Social.

In my time working on decentralized social networks, here's a strange paradox:

1. The people with no money have something usable now, along with people who actually use it
2. The people with money have nothing usable now, and no one likely to use it

This is one of the few times that VCs and billionaires have been caught with their pants down.

And I'm here for it!

Here's the logo for the #Fediverse app that @reiver and I are building.

It's a streaming #P2P video app.

We've already got it to federate with Mastodon and Pixelfed.

As you can see, we very much like apes -- they're pretty great!
