@Gte interesting to consider that originally, potus was effectively an elected version of the U.K. constitutional monarch, but over the last 250 years potus has gained power while the monarchy has ceded power to parliament.

@Gte if a country does not have a head of state, pretty soon somebody (bad) will try to be the ruler, so a symbolic head of state a good solution. Having a non-executive president like Ireland is another good option. The pomp is necessary for it to work though.
