Research Scientist
The Analytics & Data Science group at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) of UNC Chapel Hill is seeking a Research Scientist to integrate semantic web ontologies with other analytical methods including knowledge graphs, machine learning, and large language models. The Research Scientist will develop algorithms and tools involving, but not limited to: semantic modeling and automated reasoning, graph analysis, data integration, question answering, search, and text mining. The candidate will actively develop code, tests, and benchmarks to drive projects forward, and will have the capacity to develop new research projects that advance RENCI's data science portfolio. The Research Scientist will work with colleagues with expertise in data analytics, advanced computing including cloud computing systems, software engineering, and domain expertise in the biomedical and environmental sciences. The candidate will work in interdisciplinary teams, both within and beyond RENCI, promoting innovation and collaboration. The Analytics and Data Science group at RENCI contributes to a variety of critical NIH- and NSF-funded projects working at the intersection of knowledge graphs and machine learning, including the NCATS Biomedical Data Translator program and the Imageomics HDR Institute. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop new approaches for the application of bio-ontologies and other structured biological knowledge in machine-learning-based image analysis for species identification, species classification, and morphological trait extraction. This includes incorporation of ontologies into machine-learning algorithms, as well as application of ontologies to create structured output that is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).Responsibilities: - Work with colleagues to develop research software tools and methods- Collaborate with software engineers and researchers to help design analytical systems to advance scientific discovery- Contribute to and participate in meetings, workshops, trainings, conferences; prepare and give presentations on results of the research at conferences; lead and participate in drafting scientific papers reporting results of the research for publication in scientific journals- Provide leadership in user engagement and experience- Contribute to interdisciplinary teams- Train data contributors on the application of data standards and relevant tools- Develop proposals and business development efforts
