The Silencing of Kashmir: Arundhati Roy on India, Modi, and Fascism from Deconstructed with Mehdi Hasan

Listen to Deconstructed with Mehdi Hasan episodes free, on demand. India’s clampdown on the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir is entering its third month, and while the right-wing government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exerted tight control over the flow of information out of the region, a bleak picture has nonetheless emerged. Thousands have been imprisoned, including political leaders. Movement is tightly restricted. Phone lines have been cut off. Modi appears set on ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special semi-autonomous status and bringing it fully under the control of New Delhi, a move which residents of the Muslim-majority region strongly reject. Arundhati Roy, India’s most famous novelist and a passionate voice for Kashmiri self-determination, joins Mehdi Hasan to discuss the Kashmir crisis and India’s troubling rightward tilt. The easiest way to listen to podcasts on your iPhone, iPad, Android, PC, smart speaker – and even in your car. For free. Bonus and ad-free content available with Stitcher Premium.

Dr Manmohan Singh writes: “I urge the Prime Minister to set aside his deep-rooted suspicion of industrialists and entrepreneurs and nurse us back to a confident and mutually trustworthy society that can revive the animal spirits and help our economy soar.”

The fountainhead of India’s economic malaise

The citizenry’s distrust in institutions and lack of confidence in the government have caused a prolonged slowdown

Good people of Mastodon, I've been seeing a number of posts here that compare the Ayodhya judgment to a husband losing his wife to another man, treatment of rape victims etc. This is quite worrisome.

Women aren't property that one can win/lose claim over. Such comparisons reinforce the idea of ownership over women as passive objects. I have high hopes from this space and how we talk about women here.

So please do continue with the much-needed criticism, but please keep women out of it.

The trial on 11 year old Khair Mohammad during the Non Cooperation movement in 1922

It's been 100 days since I have not spoken to my Kashmiri friends.

8 Million people deserve life with dignity, they deserve RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION.

IF you don't support them then you're against Humanity.

Farmers get only Rs 8 per kg for Onion. They keep voting for BJP.

Consumers buy the same Onion at Rs 80 per Kg. They keep voting for BJP.

Then they cry. Hahaha hahaha

Ayodhya verdict | Several positives for the Muslim plaintiffs

Minorities and defenders of the rule of law and secularism need not feel disappointed with the Ayodhya verdict

While the operative part of the judgment leaves you significantly dis-satisfied and with angst, there are few positives -
1. The judgement punctures the bogey of the hindu right that mosque was built after demolition of a temple
2. the 1949 action was declared as illegal
3. the 1992 action was also declared illegal
