Because I'm on a German server my trending topics are #keinVergessen and #niemalsVergessen. This is because 9 November is the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

These brass plates in the pavements memorialise Jewish people at what were their addresses. I saw this one in Berlin in the spring. #NeverForget

@periferal she's my favorite author 🥰
what are your favorite works of #solarpunk or other inspiring transformative fiction that helps imagine a better, queerer, freer future?

Just finished reading this: "Book Parts" (ed. Dennis Duncan, Adam Smyth). Tapped into just the right vein of book-loving nerdery for me.

Chapters on all the parts that make up a book: the text, yes, but also Dust Jackets, Title Pages, Frontispieces, Indexes, Epigraphs, Running Heads, and much more.

History, function, etc. Some chapters are drier than others but all are interesting.

I'm not really in the academic world, so I have a question: I have a study I've designed, have access to land through my job, and have some preliminary data from testing the protocol for a few months ... I have been thinking about reaching out to profs and seeing if I could turn this into a master's project. Is that feasible, or do professors prefer to have students work on their own specific projects? #academia #ecology #botany

Are there friendica posts on the mastadon feed? How do you know where they came from?
@periferal does the Dispossessed by Ursula le Guin count? the book describes a moon society where labor is organized computer system, housing is on a first-come-first-serve basis, and every commodity is freely available at stores (it's not quite a utopia however, food resources are insecure on the desert moon). a man from the moon visits the planet it orbits, fully capitalist, and it's a huge culture shock
Probably not a lot of people know this now, but Mastodon's web app started out with "Publish". In 2016 a famous YouTuber jokingly offered to support Mastodon's Patreon forever if I changed the button to say "Toot" instead. Needless to say, this was a really early, and not very informed decision. The first glimpse of attention and financial support. As a non-native speaker I had no idea there was another meaning.
Important story on #ghostgear & how it impacts #ocean life from @guardian @mstdn.media:
🔹At the current rates of loss, the amount of stray fishing nets measured by area would be enough to carpet the surface of the planet in 65 years…
🔹Ghost gear contributes about 20% of marine plastic…
🔹… [ghost gear] affects 66% of marine animals, including all sea turtle species and 50% of seabirds.

‘An invisible killer’: how fishing gear became the deadliest marine plastic

Plastic in the depths: as ‘ghost gear’ chokes the ocean, campaigners call for mandatory measures including buy-back schemes and recycling
