Geri Coady, IllustratorHad the absolute best day waking up in a frozen Shirakawa-go, and discovering on check out that the Japanese family who stayed at the inn with me, had paid for my entire stay and meals too. Yes, I cried 😭
I’ve been thinking about it a lot since yesterday and the influence he had on such a traditional part of Japanese culture. I absolutely adore Hakuho, and he’s the perfect example of a foreigner who, despite all odds, rose to the top (by an extremely large margin) in both the sport and Japanese society, too. Like my friend said, the xenophobic nationalists had no choice but to embrace him or turn against their own national sport. I just hope sumo continues to be exciting without him in the ring.
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to witness the retirement ceremony of Hakuho, the greatest sumo wrestler of all time, and it was extremely emotional all around. Prime ministers of both Japan and Mongolia, celebrities, supporters and family all took turns cutting strands of his hair (280 people in total) until his stablemaster cut the top knot fully off. His mum, wearing full Mongolian national dress, also took a snip (and it was her birthday) 😭❤️
