I do wonder what happens when instances go dark. I wonder if followers ever expire...
... well, I presume other instances will start receiving 404s or DNS errors, so they might expire such followers then.

Hey @koyu, sorry to bother, but is stop.voring.me (a Calckey instance) blocked from our side? We seem to be having trouble federating with them, but I don't see their URL in your list of moderated instances, and I don't think they're blocking us, either (though I can't be sure).

I can't find any new profiles from there, but I *can* see posts from their admin, ThatOneCalculator, whom I was following from before these issues appeared; but I can't reply to him or see any replies (except if he replies to the replies).

Meanwhile, from their side (I created an account there too), I can find my koyu.space profile, but I can't follow (only request to follow, which goes nowhere); posts from koyu.space show up only if someone boosts or replies to them.

Shame that https://mastodon.art blocks the instance I'm on (https://koyu.space) for whatever reason. Guess they must have (had?) their reasons.

To have a viral post on Mastodon is to be confronted with a long series of people asking the exact same question or providing the same “well actually” response, for days, because of the limits of federation. They simply can’t see those other replies. Sometimes they see *no* ofher replies, if they’re on a tiny server.

The experience isn’t great! As with customer service, it can be hard to remember that this isn’t actually the same person over and over again.

Hey @koyu , could you shed some light on this? Is this also why my favourite posts keep disappearing? 🤔

I understand this is kinda by design, and not exclusive to koyu.space; is it that we can only interact with posts that our instance knows about? Any way to fix that (without increasing storage requirements)?

I can't complain, btw; I'm basically freeloading, as I don't have much money to contribute, and I know storage space doesn't come for free. It's just odd that Mastodon would work like this.
