@mariogibney only that when free software wins, it tends to win in ways not even its creators imagined. For example, while Linux saw a surge of desktop adoption in the early 2000s, leading some to predict it would eventually overtake MacOS and Windows, its path to becoming the most widely used OS in the world came instead via the rise of cloud computing and smartphones (e.g. Android).

@mariogibney I think any possible monetization will be in the form of donations and maybe unobtrusive advertisements that depend on the goodwill of the users of that instance---and going proprietary and potentially making it harder to migrate accounts would reduce that goodwill. Plus Mastodon software is AGPLv3, which is hard to make proprietary incrementally---you'd have to reimplement from scratch.
@alonsovalencia you can counterfeit bitcoins by tricking SPV lightweight wallets into accepting fake transactions. That's why we have full verification nodes---so that people who need strong trustless guarantees about coin authenticity can receive that guarantee.
@djbooth007 TLS in general, especially compared to mobile phones, but you never know if the website (or your local computer) have been hacked.

@kekcoin I use Tusky via F-Droid for Android. I currently use the web UI for desktop, but I'll probably setup the Mastodon bitlbee plugin at some point
