I cannot stress enough that organised media manipulators, harassers, & white supremacist orgs use flamebait, debate, flame wars, drama, arguments, outrage & tabloid gossip as part of their strategy.
Amplifying them and assembling an audience for them is exactly what they want. They will pivot on that to multiply harms - at the low end of the harm scale, they’ll goat se the audience. At the high end: hundreds of people see revenge porn of a secondary target. Or worse.
Squelch them, every time.

The slow destruction of Twitter means I don’t have to limit myself to 280 characters anymore.

So this is a LONG-ASS post about having been online for decades & lost so many spaces to malfeasance and malice & what to do now, how angry I am & how hard this will never stop being.

Because I need to SCREAM ABOUT THIS TRASH.

Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media

I bet you're wondering how we got here...

Welcome to Garbagetown
There was never going to be a “next Sagan." Everybody’s themselves and the great thing about his modern era of science communication is that it has more space for a wider array of voices doing all kinds of stuff from space to foraging to history to geology.
I've waited a few days to post this about the #mastodonmigration. Here is the evolution of the new accounts in #mastodon after the events in the last week. After each new ban/suspension in the #bluebird we see a spike in new accounts in #mastodon. But recent growth seems to be more steady at around 50k per day. Since the #bluebird purchase by Musk, more than 3 million new accounts were created in #mastodon.

@hankgreen Hey, fellow Hank!

There's some statistical percentage of people who are gonna be shallow and inflammatory, regardless of the venue. I think Mastodon's real potential is that it's not incentivized to drive engagement by promoting shallow, inflammatory takes to everyone in the world.

I am curious about how things are going to play out when the hosting bills come due.

And that drive for conformity must escalate, an ever-tightening spiral, the serpent eating its own tail, because fascistic culture cannot function without a hated out-group to attack, and in the absence of such, they must manufacture or invent new enemies.

I dunno where I'm going with all this, to be honest. I would prefer to be able to see exciting historical events from a comfortable distance of a century or so, but the times we're in are definitely interesting, regardless of my comfort.

There can be no genuine and normal social connection in those spaces, because nobody decent wants to spend time with them. Anything with vulnerability or authenticity or joy or humor or creativity or insight flees or is banished by the relentless, tedious drive to conform.
It's fascinating to watch how quickly fascists ruin any space they control. It's not enough for them to have Parler or Truth Social or whatever other festering boil they can congregate in, because they are profoundly boring and unpleasant. They have places friendly to them where they can gather and nobody wants to be there.
