Looking to join a Lemmy instance, but since I'm blind, having to deal with exclusionary captcha solutions or requests to send an email to verify I'm a human aren't something I'm interested in.Does anyone know of an instance that tries to be inclusive in their signup process? I also don't wish to be on a blindness-specific instance, as personal experience shows me that way lies a overly conservative hell I'd like nothing to do with. Also prefer an instance outside of the US for obvious reasons. Asking the fediverse at large for suggestions, as ReddIt just doesn't appeal to me considering the research I've recently done on it... #AskFedi #Lemmy #Discussions #SeekingAdvice
@nolan @esoteric_programmer As someone who is just recently made the switch from windows to Linux, I look forward to any contributions you can make to the improvement of accessibility on Linux
Been watching the latest podcast from The Linux Cast about Linux myths via the Pipeline app. Yeah, heard more of a few of those myths before, and all them were busted by the hosts. Give it a listen #TheLinuxCast #LinuxMyths #podcast

@esoteric_programmer @Stealthy Nothing reads at all as far as Pidgin is concerned, and I've avoided GTK4 apps as my preferred Mastodon client, Tuba has issues of only reading certain bits, but not posts. I've tried Fractal, but dislike that it lacks A/V call support + it has this odd habit of adding weird characters when a message is sent, especially if using contractions like can't, won't, etc
@esoteric_programmer If you happen to be on Matrix, I can be found here. If you and/or @Stealthy wish to chat, that's the best way to reach me.

@esoteric_programmer Yup... just installed the latest version, and no joy. Same results with the snap & flatpak versions
@esoteric_programmer Just moved those variables into /etc/environment & removed them from ~/.bashrc where they were previously. Restarted the system & nothing broke... thankfully. Any other accessibility environment variables you recommend? Keep in mind that this is a Ubuntu 24.10 system I'm working with here.

@esoteric_programmer I've got the following environment variables for accessibility configured:

  • export ACCESSIBILITY_ENABLED=1
  • export GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge
  • export QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1

I've tried placing them in ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc but since previous attempts to put anything in /etc/environment break the system badly for me, I'm quite hesitant to put anything there.

@esoteric_programmer Considering that I’ve tried using Pidgin on various Linux distributions, I assume that either something is very badly broken or accessibility is now considered an afterthought. Same situation on Debian Fedora, and Ubuntu. Kent comment on Arch, as I don’t have the technical know how to go through its installation process.

FireFox with PWA support

Woohoo! Managed via an extension to get FireFox to support PWAs... Of course, a couple things are slightly janky with this arrangement:

  • I had to install the .deb version of FireFox instead of using the snap or flatpak version, as it won't work with either of those methods.
  • Each PWA is essentially running in its own profile, which runs within a patched instance of FireFox (the extension refers to it as a runtime).
  • Extensions, themes & settings don't carry over from the main FireFox instance, so things like 3rd party password managers, UBlock Origin, etc won't be available unless installed in each PWA profile.
  • Thankfully it seems that better (and native) PWA support is coming to FireFox in the future... fingers crossed as it's in the nightly build currently.
