@Qldaah the current approach entrenches a dependancy mindset. As an example, in the prosperous NW minerals region of Qld, we no longer bunker fuel in Cloncurry or Mt Isa despite massive demand. Previously serviced by rail, we now transport VAST quantities of fuel to individual mine sites by triple road trains from the coast - a 700-800km trip one way. In doing so, the highways we all rely on, are being torn up, whilst the obvious alternative remains vastly under utilised. But that would require investment in storage - something fuel companies clearly don't want and govts walked away from back in the 80s. The result - every fuel hiccup is borne as immediate price spikes and a reduction in competition with almost ALL fuel coming from the Chevron facility at the Port of Townsville. So a single wholesaler for all fuel entering the NW. This isn't competition - it's a monopoly - and none of it working in the national interest.

@johnquiggin Unfortunately this will just become another "but we already pay taxes for this" argument by the people who are actively fighting against paying taxes.
