I know you donât see Lemmy or the fediverse as antisemitic, but it is rife with it.
Iâve heard of the reclaiming meaning before, but youâre not reclaiming anything when you say that zio- is a legitimate, neutral pejorative for zionism. Zio- is predominantly used by white supremacists as code to refer to Jews. Youâre not subverting or reclaiming anything, or shaping the language, because youâre still using it for its intended purpose, which is to refer to Jews. Youâre just reinforcing it.
Even more so, itâs so easy to just say âzionistâ or not even use the zio- pejorative at all. Itâs a single letter, and yet many are unable to change that, because theyâre antisemitic, as you can see in the link. Personally, I would never want to reclaim language that originates in white supremacy, because thereâs nothing to reclaim, and it gives credence to white supremacists.
Iâm sure you also recall when users of mine used the word âdegenerate,â and those users made the same arguments as you are now, that the meaning has changed. If we canât use degenerate, we certainly cannot use the zio- pejorative.
