The analogy that several Black users have said, is "Mastodon is the digital equivalent of fleeing 'regular' racism in the deep South, just to experience 'racism doesn't happen here!' racism in Boston." 🙂🙃

Mastodon has more cultural norms around not talking about racist abuse, than around preventing it from happening. I don't know how to convince y'all that this is bad.

So yeah, this creates an opening for centralizers.

@[email protected] I've always taken an "early observer, late adopter" approach to new social platforms and it's served me well, especially in more recent years. Knowing the business models and potential for misuse has made me more cynical about all of them.

Just moved! Started with mastodon.social in 2016, moved to writing.exchange in 2022, moved to zirk.us bc I'm keen to be around writers, designers, academics, etc who work to challenge and and create alternatives to the status quo. 😀

The past two years have been a roller coaster, healthwise, starting with COVID in Dec 2020, which kicked my ass for months. Just as I was starting to feel better and getting back to running regularly again, I had a stroke in June 2021. While scary, it also led to some healthy life adjustments that saw me lose (and keep off) ~30lbs, and eventually get back to running regularly again.

I ran the Ashenfelter 8k today at a 7:56/mile pace, my best since 2017! 🦃🏃🏽🎉

@[email protected] I'm actually trying to consolidate my online presence a bit, regardless of 's ultimate fate. I see Mastodon as a "knowing what I know now" reboot, which is why I want to find a good instance to settle down on; your perception of Ohai actually sounds ideal.

I reserved my handle on HIVE but there's too many privacy concerns with it for me right now, and the early appeal feels tied to marketing potential more than community connections. We'll see...
