@neil In particular it now tends to work with very new hardware, when in the past you would have to resort to older hardware on Linux. And unlike Windows it still works with old hardware too, like my combined flatbed and feeder scanner from HP that must be 20 years old. No driver for modern Windows, but works just fine, including paper source selection and duplex, using Gnome's document scanner. It would be expensive and wasteful if I had to replace it with a new one.
