La nave metaniera russa Arctic Metagaz, colpita lo scorso 4 marzo probabilmente da droni navali ucraini al largo della costa di Malta, è alla deriva da giorni. Il relitto si sta avvicinando, spinto dai venti, verso la costa maltese e se dovesse esplodere, spiegano le autorità locali, causerebbe danni catastrofici.
Il governo maltese ha attivato un piano di emergenza per prevenire una “catastrofe a terra“. La nave è attualmente a 50 miglia nautiche (meno di 100 chilometri) a sudovest di Malta. I venti la stanno spingendo al momento in direzione della costa occidentale di Gozo. “Tutto dipende dalla direzione del vento, ma se continua così potrebbe arrivare tra domenica notte e lunedì mattina” ha riferito una fonte al Times of Malta. Le autorità della Valletta da ieri stanno collaborando con quelle italiane per scongiurare una catastrofe ambientale predisponendo l’intervento di tre rimorchiatori per evitare che il relitto possa entrare nelle acque territoriali dell’arcipelago. Le forze aeree maltesi (Afm) stanno sorvolando sopra la nave alla deriva tre volte al giorno per monitorare la sua posizione.
Si stima che a bordo della Arctic Metagaz ci siano ancora 700 tonnellate di gas liquefatto. Sempre il Times of Malta riporta che anche ieri sono state registrate esplosioni. “Non sappiamo se sarà possibile salire a bordo e assicurare il relitto ai rimorchiatori, né è stato ancora stabilito dove potrebbe essere trainato, ma stiamo cercando di identificare un punto di sufficiente profondità” dichiarano le autorità maltesi, che spiegano come l’idea sia quella di l’affondamento dell’imbarcazione che, nonostante i gravi danni, ha ancora intatti due dei suoi quattro depositi di gas. Il rischio maggiore per La Valletta è quello di contaminazione delle acque che metterebbe in crisi l’approvvigionamento idrico dell’intero arcipelago, totalmente affidato agli impianti di desalinizzazione marina. Rimane la paura anche per una possibile esplosione del relitto a contatto con le coste maltesi o con altre navi: “Se esplodesse vicino alla costa le conseguenze sarebbero catastrofiche”.

The Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz, reportedly hit on March 4th by possibly Ukrainian naval drones off the coast of Malta, has been drifting for days. The wreckage is moving towards the Maltese coast, pushed by the winds, and if it were to explode, authorities say, it would cause catastrophic damage.
The Maltese government has activated an emergency plan to prevent a “landfall.” The ship is currently 50 nautical miles (less than 100 kilometers) southwest of Malta. The winds are currently pushing it towards the western coast of Gozo. “It all depends on the wind direction, but if it continues like this it could arrive between Sunday night and Monday morning,” a source told the Times of Malta. Authorities in Valletta have been collaborating with Italian authorities since yesterday to avert an environmental disaster, deploying three salvage tugboats to prevent the wreckage from entering the territorial waters of the archipelago. The Maltese Air Force (Afm) is flying over the drifting ship three times a day to monitor its position.
It is estimated that there are still 700 tons of liquefied gas aboard the Arctic Metagaz. The Times of Malta also reports that explosions were registered yesterday. “We don’t know if it will be possible to board the ship and secure the wreck to the tugboats, nor has it been established where it could be towed, but we are trying to identify a point of sufficient depth,” Maltese authorities say, explaining that the idea is to have the vessel’s sinking, despite the serious damage, still intact two of its four gas tanks. The greatest risk for Valletta is water contamination that would put the entire archipelago’s water supply – entirely reliant on marine desalination plants – in crisis. The fear remains of a possible explosion of the wreck in contact with the Maltese coasts or other ships: “If it exploded near the coast, the consequences would be catastrophic.”
