@peterrelph @Timolarch : Maybe "national insanity" is simply a form of "brain rot" (Oxford's word of the year👇) ...one that crosses more generations and is not as focused on Gen Z and Alpha?

'Brain Rot' Is Oxford's Word Of The Year 2024 - Forbes India

It's a term that internet users have undoubtedly seen over and again on social networks, especially since the frequency of its use has risen by 230 percent in one year, peaking in September

In defense of my agnosticism, I see several explanations:

@Timolarch I agree we're living in strange (and dangerous) times with threats of autocratic rule, expanding wars & WMD, political & media polarization, the advent of social media misinformation bubbles, now AI's potential to make fiction appear real.

These seem equally existential (especially if taken together), more immediate, and may even have easier fixes than climate change.

@oddzap I've read a bit on this and it's sounds interesting. Your link did not work for me. Do you have another path?

IDK, the atrocities on Oct 7 strike me as bad, too. No where near symmetric to the retaliation, but still bad...and the terrorist perpetrators enjoy broad public support as far as I can tell.

If both sides were able to acknowledge atrocities of their own side, maybe peace would be closer.

I disagree...I believe there's an unavoidable degree of intertwining. That doesn't deny the viability of a social democracy or democratic socialism. Those blends work for some sovereign states in the linear spectrum (an axis if you will) between anarcho-capitalism and a communist dictatorship. And the system that works best for a nation state, is not necessarily best replicated regionally, locally, or within a business entity.

My hypothesis:

Even in the same region, age, and architecture, the variety is remarkable. The builder-grade steel stamped faux 6 panel door so common in the US may be cheap & practical, but the character is definitely lacking:

Seems to me that our shared understanding of reality has deteriorated as a result of disbelief in any "reliable reporter of facts". And to dangerous levels.

Are organizations with a reputation of being "reliable reporters" ever duped into broadcasting government propaganda or other forms of misinformation? Sure.

@slotrak

The cult may never change their mind. However, given the popular vote, I find it hard to believe all voting for him are really part of the "cult".

I think many simply disagreed with "identity politics" and are not informed about his stated intent and its implications, or who benefits.
Many also don't know meeting all his campaign promises is infeasible w/o sparking more inflation (or worse economically).

If term 2 is as bad as we think, we'll need those same people on our side.
