Stereotypes are my boogeyman. They/Him/She; I don't mind. Typo Jedi and autocorrect neglector.

Honestly compulsory voting is one of the best things about Australian democracy.

Trying to explain it to the yanks is just bonkers.

Seriously, don’t bother visiting the US until 2029. That's my advice. Plenty of fascinating and more welcoming countries out there.

Entering the US has become more fraught. Here’s what you need to know

Planning a holiday to the United States? Here’s an overview of the strict new Trump administration-enforced immigration border measures.

What would a truly socialist prime minister say to their country about immigration ?

"Sánchez urged Spaniards to reject stereotypes and hoaxes about migration. In the past decade, 94% of migrants who had arrived in Spain had done so legally, he said. About 40% of them were Latin Americans, 30% hailed from other parts of Europe and 20% were from Africa. “We’re talking about a diverse migration flow that looks nothing like the image [perpetuated by] the far right.”

"Migrants were more likely to be working than people born in Spain, and less likely to access social services, he said. When age and income levels are taken into account, the rates of delinquency were about the same for both groups, he added.

"“I want citizens to understand that this is not a battle between Spaniards and foreigners, or Christians and Muslims or saints and criminals,” he said. “It is a battle between truth and lies, between tales and data, between what is in the interests of our society and the interests of a few who see fear and hatred of foreigners as their only path to power.”"

I made a histogram of wealth distribution in the United States, using the Forbes 400 list that just came out. Almost the entire US population is in the red line at the left, one pixel wide. To fit Elon Musk on the graph, each pixel is $500 million wide. In other words, from the perspective of the very rich, $0 and $500 million look the same.

Good point here - cash handling costs way more than dealing with credit card payments (estimated here as 3.9% of a purchase).

"As part of the debate about surcharges imposed by retailers on people who pay with a card or another electronic device versus physical money, I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve had to explain that cash is not free."

The costly business of cash has to change

Still loving #shirtaloon's He Who Fights With Monsters. I'm up to book 10 and looking forward to book 11, which was released a couple of days ago.

I can plough thru books, so when I find a really great series, I try to slow myself, thin out my intensity a bit by reading a book from a different author in between volumes. I'm having trouble finding anything up to Shirtaloon's match for my taste. I'm finding plenty of OK stuff, but it's all a bit too shallow, a bit annoyingly sexist and toxically stereotyped. LitRPG and isekai sub-genres have huge potential, but we need a bit of wisdom added to the community.

#History This article from 2020 is ever important. When we look to the fall of empires, we look at dramatic events: sacking, razing, plagues. What we miss is the slow deterioration of the administrative state. https://www.motherjones.com/media/2020/03/how-do-you-know-if-youre-living-through-the-death-of-an-empire/
I'm a historian, and I studied the fall of Rome. Here's what life is like in a dying empire.

Now I've discovered LitRPG. The latest books' author seems to be a socialist philosopher. I love *fun* fiction as a social commentary.

Long time since I visited social media. Like, months! I forgot how many people are easy to relate to. I've been looking after my elderly parents. They're coming to crunch point. There's about .75 of a responsible adult brain between them (which is scary). My escape has become books. Currently re-reading CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series and Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. Beats social media for stress relief

The whole concept of using super to pay for housing is identical to the approach that created the housing crisis — a neoliberal non-solution that deepens and extends the crises for the benefit of the wealthiest.

Kicking the can down the road by robbing from the future to satiate the greed and failures of both the past and present.
