Sometimes a bit of hardware changes a whole industry, only it takes a bit for the industry to realize it. This week’s Techpod is about the Intellimouse Explorer and how it changed mice forever.

240: The Mouse That Changed Everything | Brad & Will Made a Tech Pod.

We're taking another close look at a product that broke out and redefined its entire category, this time the venerable IntelliMouse Explorer. These days it's hard to remember that it was Microsoft who banished the infernal ball and introduced the optical mouse to the mainstream, so we head back to 1999 and discuss what mice were like beforehand, how mechanical and optical sensors work, debate PS/2 versus USB, make an argument that the whole PC gaming accessory ecosystem owes its existence to this product, and more. Nice to keep Masto work free sometimes, but this is more personal musings than anything.

I'm going to raise capital to make a start up and the process has started. First meeting with VCs this week.

I'm in no hurry, so I think the challenge will be getting a fair deal. I can imagine it being quite a dance between "I want money to work" and "come on I'm worth more than that".

Saw Russian Circles last night and they were awesome and frightening Main reflection for me: the amount of noise a drummer can get out of a small kit. Old mate last night had snare, rack tom, floor tom and a kick, two crash cymbals, a ride and a high hat. That's it. And this sort of thing comes out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi-Lo4cHjJ0

ABC walks away from Twitter (about time). I wonder if they have considered standing up their own fediverse server? It would be great for their journos to have the umbrella of their own server to give them credibility under their editorial standards - and maybe protect them from some of the faceless attackers https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-09/abc-abandons-the-majority-of-twitter-accounts/102706816
David Anderson says ABC will abandon the majority of Twitter accounts

The ABC is discontinuing all but four accounts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to focus on the accounts that provide the most value

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.
