Now the closing keynote by my colleague Antal van den Bosch at the National AI Conference with a beautiful reference in the title.

Next was an engaging panel on engaging citizens in #AI development and impact assessment at @CPDPconferences with @gastev, Alyna Smith, Laura Galindo-Romero, and Jana Gajdosova. I like how many panelists pushed to move beyond citizens and considering migrants in this conversation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltaDETvTMDc (10/11)

While the AI doomers were reading sci-fi novels, we Data School were developing impact assessments & audit processes, identifying empirically verified harms & real risks, and ways to mitigate them.
We do not write open letters but work on actual solutions to real problems
I'm at #CPDP2023 with several colleagues from @utrechtuniversity research area Governing the Digital Society. I'll be moderating the panel "Beyond Ethics Washing. Impact Assessments, Audits & Oversight for AI" on Friday morning at Area 42 Grand.

It has been often claimed that humanities & social sciences fall short in impactful research. At Utrecht Data School we do things differently! Our research approach is informed by close cooperation with external partners. It provides learning opportunities for students, responds to societal needs, delivers applicable results, and informs academic research. Here's an article on the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurial research.

🚨Tech companies are increasingly involved in European (digital) security governance.

In our new JEPP article, @AObendiek and I try to understand why, tracing the effects of ideational business power in 2 case studies on #palantir and #gaiax.

The article is part of a timely and very rich special issue on the rise of the regulatory security state in Europe, edited by the amazing Andreas Kruck and Moritz Weiss.

The Datafied Society. Studying Culture through Data

At Utrecht Data School, we often investigate political debates on social media. Last year, we reviewd these projects to understand better how "expertise" is constituted, projected and assigned across different platforms and topics. We identify new types of "experts" (at times unrelated to any specialized knowledge) and dynamics of assigning "expertise" based on ideological preferences.

Expertise

Over the past years, Utrecht Data School has carried out several research projects where we were investigating communication patterns and fragmented audiences on social media. Examples for these projects are our inquiry into the Hydroxychloroquine debate, the media consumption choices of Dutch farmers, or debates on datacenters. In addition, we had worked with external partners who were interested in learning about the dynamic of fragmented audiences, knowledge dissemination, and their…
