cohost to shut down at end of 2024

also the August 2024 financial update, but I’m trying not to bury the lede. Hi everyone, We have come to the decision to cease operations of cohost and anti software software club due to lack of funding and burnout. As of today, none of us are being paid for our labor1; all of our money in the bank, and any money coming in from people who buy our merch or don’t cancel cohost plus, is going towards servers and operations — paying the bills so we can turn the lights off with as little disruption as possible. cohost will become read-only on Tuesday, October 1st. At this time, we will make best-effort attempts to keep the servers online through the end of 2024. Development focus has immediately shifted to data export. We have offered minimal data export for GDPR compliance for a while now, but this is a barebones system that doesn’t meet our quality standards. We will be improving this system over the next few weeks and will issue full data exports for all users when the site goes read-only. We will continue to offer downloads of your data export through the end of the read-only period. When the read-only period concludes, we will delete all of your data from our servers without a backup. Even now we want to reiterate that we think “data brokerage” and other common practices of the software industry are inimical to who we are as people, and we would never consider selling your data to others or asserting any rights to stuff you posted under any circumstance. Majority control of the cohost source code will be transferred to the person who funded the majority of our operations, as per the terms of the funding documents we signed with them; Colin and I will retain small stakes so we have some input on what happens to it, at their request. ---------------------------------------- So, what happened? If you’ve read our financial updates, you know that we have never been profitable. This isn’t surprising, even with a team of four; social media is a notoriously unprofitable industry. We had planned to bring in new revenue with eggbux (our tipping and subscription product) but policy changes from Stripe forced us to cancel earlier this year. Since then, we’ve struggled to fill the revenue and morale gap. Colin and I have been doing this for five years, Aidan for three, Kara for nearly two. We’ve been at or over capacity on moderation, engineering, and general operations nearly this entire time. We have all been on-call 24/7/365 since we launched two and a half years ago. The day-to-day needs of just running the site meant developing alternative funding options wasn’t possible. MAU and MRR are down across the year. We’ve managed to build a social media platform that many of our users love, but we just don’t have enough users and we don’t have the resources to safely scale up. It’s important to know when to call it quits. We’re grateful for all the incredible things y’all have created on cohost. We’re grateful for eggbug. We’re grateful that we were able to try and show a better path for social media, even if it didn’t work out exactly as we would have liked. We’re going to do our best to keep things online through the end of the year with the money we have, but we might need additional funding to keep things up until then. If you would be able to contribute funds if necessary, please e-mail us at [email protected] [[email protected]]. Thank you all for having used cohost. We’ll see you around. :eggbug: ~ jae (and colin, and aidan, and kara) ---------------------------------------- TIMELINE * Immediately: self-service account deletions are available in the settings page [https://cohost.org/rc/user/settings]. account sign-up and activation is no longer available. Please note that if you delete your account before receiving a data export, you will not receive one; there won’t be any data left for us to export. * October 1, 2024: cohost will become read-only. all cohost plus subscriptions will be cancelled. account deletions will remain available. * starting October 1, 2024: we will begin processing data exports for all users. we expect this process to take some time. once your export is ready, you will receive an e-mail with a link to download it. data export downloads will remain available until the servers shut down on December 31. * December 31, 2024: cohost will go fully offline. all user data will be deleted on our way out the door. * January 1, 2025: we will set cohost.org [http://cohost.org] to redirect to the wayback machine2 to prevent link rot. this is something we will be paying for out of pocket since ASSC will no longer be an operating concern, but it’s max $100 per year total so it’s fine. How big of a percentage of fedi is he gonna accuse of being Eris alts before he gets his head out of his ass

I think Eris sucks but this is dumb as hell
i've been playing coral island and also dipping in and out of other games in the genre, but i have a really rough time with them and i finally realized something.

these games have a stamina mechanic as well as a time mechanic. you have only so much stamina in a day, with the option to consume items or maybe to sit in the hot springs, sacrificing time to regain stamina. there are a multitude of activities, which include farming, foraging, mining, socializing, completing random errands for townies, going to festivals, etc.

i keep getting into this loop where i get really sucked into one aspect, ie mining, and managing stamina and keeping track of the time is a chore. because i can't just *keep mining* and chill out and vibe. if i run out of stamina or stay in the mines too long, the game punishes me.

this is true for almost all such games in the genre.

another aspect is that, if i focus on one activity to the exclusion of others... i feel icky about it? like it's better to run around the map foraging and chatting up townies every day after using up stamina, but that also feels like such an interruption and chore that i have to do before i can get back to the part i was actually hyped about.

in reality, i struggle with these "cozy" games because they allow me to reenact the trauma and shame of my real life— where i don't have enough energy to do the things i care about, where dealing with my time blindness is stressful and full of consequences, where i feel guilty for forgetting to talk to my friends or forgetting their birthdays, and where i always have the lingering feeling there's something more important i should be doing, or something i'm forgetting.

the aggravation i feel at being unable to hyperfocus on a portion of a game just results in this emulation of guilt. because if i let myself hyperfocus and neglect the other aspects for a bit, i am overwhelmed with the anxiety that i've done something wrong, and i must delete my save and redo it from scratch. over and over again.
Tenforward.social has blocked kitty.social. Source: https://tenforward.social/@guinan/113101811954202960

And good riddance, I say to that. A mutual block of their domain has been instated: if we cannot trust the administrators of a site to be civil and uphold the peace, we have no business federating with them.

Kitty.social received two reports from tenforward.social yesterday, I would assume from packetcat, one of them for a now-removed post, and the other one for
@Linux stating I would not "respond well to threats", in the context of packetcat's publication of the first report. I haven't seen the content of the first reported post due to the fact that it is now gone, but the user who made the post is a regular around here and I have absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe that their post was made with racist, harmful, or harassing intentions.

Apparently both
guinan and packetcat (at) tenforward.social are the same person, so claimed by packetcat, and they are the admin of the same. While I was not able to see one of the reported posts, what I can see is the overwhelming amount of "receipts" which packetcat has provided, in which a majority of them are simply asking for them to stop making so much noise on #fediblock. Packetcat seems to be responding by claiming that the entirety of this situation is targeted racism, and verbally lashing out in a rude, harassing manner towards those who seem to simply be trying to keep the peace.

I personally don't subscribe to the ideology of
#fediblock, but I can understand its' merits, and it is my opinion that both Packetcat's conduct, and their abuse of the hashtag calling on the blocking of innocent instances, is detrimental to the fediverse community as a whole. I would ask anybody who is seeing these posts to please do your research into the matter and use your best judgement when making the decision to act.

Trying to stay away from opinion,
packetcat's YouTube video on the matter seems ironically hypocritical. I would like to say that I cannot confirm or deny that they are being targeted, that may very well be true, but I have no knowledge of the claimed situation, and I would like to emphasize that I am not calling packetcat a liar on that matter. However, their claims that virtually everyone against them are racist are hypocritical to their own statements that you can't just use a factor of yourself to justify being targeted, especially when there are no grounds to believe the majority of it was racially motivated. Additionally, packetcat calls out two other races for being problematic, which equally sounds to me like he has problematic views of his own towards other peoples in society.

In summary, we will no longer be federating with this site as the drama their admin has brought has no place here.

Everyone I Don't Like is Eris!: A Child's Guide to Social Media Administration

I’ve been a good girl, I’ve stayed off public meta posting. but you do not just post about shooting trans women in the head, deny public deadnaming of a trans woman happened by just saying “no it didn’t,” and say that latine people are “even worse” than white people in the same day.

fuck this.

I am recommending all admins defederate tenforward.social as an unsafe instance. their admin is racist and transmisogynist and obsessed with a trans woman he hates, has been publicly harassing her for two days, and now openly posts violent fantasies about trans women.

Finally cleaned out almost all the games from my phone. Could you believe I was playing like 5 Merge Dragons clones at once?
