It's a little disturbing how often I'll follow up on a citation in an academic study to find that it doesn't say what the citing author says it did. or, at best, a tiny portion of the paper does say it but the overall main point of the paper is missed

Can democratic national political regimes coexist with subnational-level authoritarianism? How does the relationship between national and subnational governments affect regimes and policies?

These question are explored throughout the Americas in these books.

Since Hadley has announced it on twitter I will do the honours on here, but I'll forego the pirate-speak out of common decency...

There's a new chapter on #ApacheArrow and Parquet data in R4DS. It's mostly based on my work so please let me know if you spot any problems with the chapter and I promise to annoy Hadley with a pull request fixing it #RStats

*Democratic Health Check*
Personalistic leaders, apathetic voters and eroding institutions. The many challenges of modern politics lack little attention, where many great minds warn remind us that democracy does not sustain itself.
So what are we saying, and what do we know?
