Germany’s conservatives: A high degree of #renewable energy in the #grid will not be possible for a large country. #spain Hold my beer.
Nice to see how Spain successfully reduced hydrocarbons from its #electricity generation mix.
#Renewable #energy doesn’t undermine electricity reliability as data on outages shows:
Germany and Denmark: 52% and 80% #renewables have 13 minutes of outages per year.
France: 55 minutes (#nuclear dominated)
Poland: 4 hours (#coal dominated)
USA: 2 hours (#gas dominated).
More #electricity was generated from #solar than from coal in Texas this year in March! That’s how progress looks like.
Lower reliance on gas imports. Any patriotic politician of a country that doesn’t produce gas should strive for near energy independence whilst keeping its electricity clean and cheap. California is showing us how it’s done. AFD in Germany, I heard you’re patriotic. No? Why not?
The largest #solar project in the world saves 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The recently opened Al Dhafra plant in Abu Dhabi covers 21 square kilometres of desert and delivers electricity to a price no nuclear plant could achieve: only USD 1.32 cents/KWh!
Climate finance is expensive. Consumers shouldn’t be footing the bill when the money is actually available elsewhere. Annual fossil fuel subsidies are a multiple of current investments in renewables and financing sustainable solutions. There is no shortage of cash. We need better investment policies.
Installing more #renewables is almost pointless, if it doesn’t also lead to a higher proportion of generated clean electricity. Now, that’s exactly what happened. May so far has seen the highest share of generation from renewables in the EU. Ever. #energyindependence
They say the electricity grid doesn’t work without primary energy. They say #renewables are not the answer to improving #energy #security. Reality: the U.K. is nearing fossil fuel free generation, hitting a new record low of only 2.4% during a half hour period this month. AND with record low electricity prices.
Renewable #energy is unreliable right? Wrong. With battery storage, the energy stored during sunny hours can be used during evening peak demand. On April 16th, battery storage was the biggest #electricity supply in California briefly over evening hours. The first time ever. This makes #renewables much more reliable and similar to baseload generators. This is a historic point for the energy transition. Chart by Gavin Mooney
At times of falling electricity demand, you’d expect for fossil generated electricity also to fall. However, despite the recent increase in electricity demand in the EU, fossil generation continues to fall. Great news. High renewables output leads to lower prices and cleaner air.
