Ha! Day 2 of struggling with cuda, and I think I have finally won! Turns out I actually didn't have to compile or hand-install anything on Ubuntu 18.04. Just follow these steps:

This is only the backup program that has been busy for 6 hours. Nice.
There's so much I love about having Ubuntu as my main OS, in particular for Deep Learning related tasks with a lot of data handling and many remote machines. However, as a "lazy" user of technology on a daily basis, things that annoy me just keep piling up. This might be spilling oil onto the flames of all you "linux doesn't work anyways" people out there (I don't agree), but here's my current list of personal issues anyway.
