The next feature for Fidus Writer 4.1 is ready - import of embedded citations (ODT: @jabref and @zotero DOCX: Zotero, Mendeley, Citavi, Endnote). And export of embedded citations to both. And import of different source types into the reference collection (Zotero, Mendeley, PBIB, RIS, Citavi XML). We have documented our (still incomplete) research on formats, so that others also can add such features to their apps: https://github.com/fiduswriter/biblatex-csl-converter/blob/main/CITATIONS_IN_DOCS.md

Try this tool on your bibliography files (or ODT/DOCX with citations). Does it read your citations correctly? If not, let us know what isn't working. https://fiduswriter.github.io/biblatex-csl-converter/

@zotero is supported already. It is no problem creating example files with Zotero as it is open source and it's also the tool we use on a daily basis. We even support drag-and-drop from Zotero directly into FW documents.
Help needed! We are working on creating a general citation import filter. So we need ODT/DOCX files containing citations that were created with EndNote, Mendeley, Citavi, Paperpile... and any other citation manager you like to use. The converter will also be available for other open source citation management tools. Please send us your sample files! [email protected]

First large feature for Fidus Writer 4.1 ready - Two-factor authentication (2FA) support has been merged!

We now have a list of expected features that we hope to implement during 2026 [1]. Anything you think is missing? Anything you think is a waste of time to do?

>>> 45 projects have been selected for the latest @NGIZero open call.

We congratulate all the grantees and thank them for contributing to a free, open, resilient, secure and human-centered internet.

In a world increasingly in the grip of proprietary technologies and those who control them, it is key to support people who are working on the digital commons: shared digital technologies that serve not the few but are available to everybody.

>>> Continuing our monthly interview series "Building a Free Internet of the Future", we had a conversation with Chrystalleni Loizidou, @NGIZero regional representative in Cyprus.

---> She talked about meaningful participation in a free/libre technology funding programme:

We have just been notified that we will receive funding for the next step of Fidus Writer development from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet programme through NLNet's NGI Zero Commons Fund! 2026 will be all about modularisation: Making Fidus Writer work in different environments, from big servers to within other apps.

Unfortunately, the program is running out in 2027.
