Israel vows to target Lebanon's Hezbollah even if cease-fire reached with Hamas in Gaza

Israel’s defense minister vowed to step up attacks on Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group even if a cease-fire is reached with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Sunday that anyone who thinks that a temporary ceasefire with Gaza will also apply to Hezbollah is “mistaken.” Hezbollah has been exchanging fire with Israel throughout the war in Gaza, but has said it would halt its nearly daily attacks on Israel if a cease-fire is reached in Gaza. Diplomats from the United States and European countries have presented a series of proposals hoping to produce a deal that would tamp down the border conflict.

Convicted former Russian mayor cuts jail time short by agreeing to fight in Ukraine

Russian local media say a disgraced former mayor convicted over bribery has had his prison sentence cut short after signing a contract to fight with Russia’s military in Ukraine. Oleg Gumenyuk, who served as mayor of the far eastern city of Vladivostok between 2018 and 2021, was convicted last year of accepting bribes worth about $432,000 and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. However, he was released after agreeing to fight in Ukraine, his lawyer told Russian news outlet Kommersant. He said that the politician’s whereabouts were unknown, but that Gumenyuk was instructed to report to his military unit on Dec. 22.

Danish appeals court upholds guilty verdicts for 3 Iranians convicted on terror charges

A Danish appeals court has upheld guilty verdicts for three members of an Iranian separatist group convicted of promoting terror in Iran and gathering information for an unnamed Saudi intelligence service. The three were arrested in February 2020 and convicted of promoting terror over a deadly attack on a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz in September 2018. The Eastern Court in Copenhagen said Tuesday the men belonged to the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz and had been gathering information about individuals and organizations in Denmark and abroad, as well as on Iranian military affairs, and passing it on to Saudi intelligence. Their sentences are to be announced later this year.

Paramedics found guilty in death of Elijah McClain

Two Denver-area paramedics have been convicted of giving a fatal overdose of the sedative ketamine to Elijah McClain in 2019. Experts say Friday's verdict could have a chilling effect on first responders around the country. The jury found Aurora Fire Rescue paramedics Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec guilty of criminally negligent homicide. The case is notable as it’s the first of several recent criminal prosecutions against medical first responders to reach trial. The death of the 23-year-old Black man received little attention until protests over the 2020 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis made McClain’s name a rallying cry.

Florida Republican Party suspends chairman Christian Ziegler

The Republican Party of Florida has suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler and is demanding his resignation as police investigate a rape allegation against him. The action came during an emergency meeting Sunday that followed calls by Gov. Ron DeSantis and other GOP leaders for Ziegler to step down. Police records show Ziegler is accused of raping a woman with whom he and his wife, Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler, had a prior consensual sexual relationship. The party’s executive committee will hold a second vote in the future on whether to remove Ziegler. He says he is innocent and the encounter with the woman was consensual.

Ex-Philadelphia labor leader convicted of embezzling from union to pay for home renovations, meals

Longtime former Philadelphia labor leader John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty and a codefendant have been convicted of using more than $650,000 in union funds for their personal use. It's the second conviction that federal prosecutors have secured against the long-powerful figure since a sweeping 2019 indictment. Dougherty led Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for nearly three decades. The jury capped a monthlong trial by convicting Dougherty on Thursday of conspiracy, embezzlement and dozens of other charges. Prosecutors said he and codefendant Brian Burrows, Local 98′s former president, used the money for home renovations, concerts, groceries and other items. Both men are to be sentenced in March.
