I haven't been on here in a while and kind of lost my bearings - is anyone on here interested in #BrooklineTownMeeting updates? I'd normal post on twitter but would really like to continue avoiding it if possible.
Universal basic income. Why am I not paid for the work that I do.
Speculative fiction has always been my favorite genre. I didn’t know it was called that for a long time, so I used to just describe it as sci-fi but more like real life with weird things mixed in.

A teenager in the Bronx was accused of stealing a backpack. The police arrested him.

Couldn't make bail. Would spend 2 years on Riker's island awaiting a trial.

-only for the charges to be dropped. Many were appalled, they set it up for him to go to community college. That's where I met him once- my electronics club. Made an LED Christmas tree-he seemed... so so so sad.

He took his own life later that year.

Anyways. Uh, Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250 million bail. #cw

The amendment failed, but 79(!) TMMs voted for it.

During debate, the Advisory Committee's explanation was that it was removed because it failed to mention that "it is well-documented that exclusionary covenants existed in Brookline which prohibited sales and rentals to Jewish, Irish, and Chinese people in addition to people of color." I don't understand why that would cause them to remove the clause completely. TMM Chi Chi Wu also asked if they realize that Chinese people are people of color.

@marissav I have an extremely hard time taking the Advisory Committee seriously when they're so out of step with the will of Town Meeting and the general public.

Tonight, #BrooklineTownMeeting will be voting on a resolution calling for an affordable housing overlay district study committee (this is good!)

The Advisory Committee is proposing an amendment, in which they remove a single line:

"WHEREAS exclusionary zoning disproportionately harms buyers and renters of color"

There is no logical reason to remove this clause – it's 100% true and relevant to the article. I'm extremely curious to see who ends up voting for this amendment. 👀

@kavana This is great, thank you!

Town Meeting voted no on Article 34, 63-168-9, preferring to allow themselves to continue to vote in their own self interest. Both the margin and the result of this vote are incredibly disappointing.

Article 35 passed, 148-82-10.

Tonight #BrooklineTownMeeting will vote on Articles 34 and 35, which seek to introduce a financial interest by-law for Town Meeting. I am the lead petitioner on these articles, which would require Town Meeting Members to abstain from voting when they have a financial interest in an article, and require Town Meeting speakers to disclose any financial interest before their remarks.
