Ensemble perception is part of the power behind strikingly detailed visualization's like Fernanda Viegas + Martin Wattenberg's wind maps, Periscopic's US Gun Deaths, and Nadieh Bremer's Wars.. as well as more utilitarian charts like jitter plots.

A chart from a 2018 dataviz 📊 study. This has melted my brain a bit.

The chart is meant to raise awareness about radon exposure and nudge people to get their homes tested. Specifically, it's meant to show smokers that they're at increased risk.

What effect do you think it actually has?!

So cool! My "Dispersion vs Disparity" research with Cindy Xiong Bearfield made it into @albertocairo's new "Art of Insight" book. We snuck into @Allitorban's inspiring chapter on "Making Data Friendly." I'm so proud to see equity-focused dataviz make it into print.

This is icing on the cake though, because collaborating with Alli was such a wonderful experience. She's one of the most visually articulate people in the field and absolutely brought the research to life.

As an added bonus, we found out that Nathalie Overdevest actually live-sketched the whole session, so we got this gem as well! I’m super grateful for the chance to share our work with the VIS community.
Cindy got a few “action shots.” Xavier Ho did a fantastic job hosting the “Journalism & The Public” session, and it was a blast sharing a panel with the other researchers (Francesca Morini, Hwiyeon Kim and Muna Alebri).

...hypothetically, let's say that right before you raise this question, your cat had been reading the Paw Street Journal. They'd just seen a chart showing recent polling results. Apparently 75% of cats support "cat-mounted attack lasers."

In this scenario, you might notice that your otherwise unopinionated cat has become suspiciously pro-laser.

Why though?

I appreciate @albertocairo's opener here...

"Just stick with me for 30 seconds, I promise it'll pay off.."

I need this as a t-shirt or maybe a zoom background?

Ethical Infographics: In data visualization, journalism meets engineering

I have an article ( PDF ) in the Spring issue of The IRE Journal , the magazine of Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. It's titled 'Eth...

For charts showing big partisan attitude gaps (like the realistic-but-fake survey results we generated for these charts), as people shift their attitudes toward their political party, the two parties' average attitudes can diverge away from each other. That is, these charts can increase issue polarization across party lines.
Charts like these don't just passively show survey results, they can actively shape viewers' attitudes toward the policies being visualized. Viewers shift their opinions to match what's shown for their identity group. (i.e. Showing an idea is popular can make it more popular.)
I'm excited to share that my new paper with Cindy Xiong Bearfield was accepted to #ieeevis! We show that public opinion charts can actively influence the public’s opinions. For example, highlighting political polarization can make it worse.
