2023 starting strong: A cool clear night to walk along the waterfront with a couple of friends and their dog, enjoying the stillness of the water, the lights and sounds of people partying on the other side, and a short, small unsanctioned fireworks display.

Happy New Year everyone! I dare not *hope* for much, but I *wish* for more nights like this and less of… well, everything else that 2022 threw at us.

Florence has a huge, gorgeous 19th-Century synagogue, which doubles as a Jewish museum. I've never seen such a perfect simultaneous statement of "we are of here" and "we are of the Middle East" in a single building. I was surprised by how much that moved me. That plus a contextualisation of the grand building as celebrating the freedom to be visible as a community after centuries of confinement in the ghetto.

WTF is this new "VIPs" mailbox that Apple Mail has created and I apparently can't remove?

It contains exactly one person, whose email address I've searched for a couple of times in the past week precisely because we email _rarely enough_ that I didn't remember it and she wasn't the first autocomplete for her first name. I can remove her from the category, but not remove the mailbox.

I just want software to do what I tell it to. Why is that so hard?

I'm reading up on travel to Haïti, because I may be going there soonish for work. My lord white people are terrible. First in the airlines list there is "MFI (Missionary Flights International) fly to Cap also from Florida, but only registered non-Catholic Christian missionaries are welcome aboard."
