I'm reading up on travel to Haïti, because I may be going there soonish for work. My lord white people are terrible. First in the airlines list there is "MFI (Missionary Flights International) fly to Cap also from Florida, but only registered non-Catholic Christian missionaries are welcome aboard." And then there's Labadee:
Ironically, I'm hoping to go there to train some people at the central bank so that they can take over maintenance of a thing a foreign NGO is currently doing for them. Sadly if I do go I am likely to spend my time there sequestered behind fences because personal safety is a problem in Port-au-Prince, but at least I can go there knowing I'll be transferring skills to the place, rather than becoming the latest white shithead to tell Haïtians what they should do.
@eldang Gods that sounds hard, much respect for making the best of it and at least not being a parasite~
@dzuk not so much personally hard as guilt-inducing and a shame. I wish this client could send me to some of the other places we work on like Bogotá, Dakar or Bakı, where I'd be able to tack on a few days to walk around an interesting city.
