📣 For fellow Mastodon rookies - I understand that ‘favouriting’ things doesn’t amplify them to your followers in the way that ‘liking’ would have on Twitter

So if you want to share something, you need to ‘boost’ it

Trying to get my head round a different threshold for sharing things on here!

#TwitterMigration #MastodonRookie

Can’t emphasise enough how much the Mastodon experience is improved by choosing the right app to use it. The official Mastodon app is terrible with very limited functionality, making for a very isolated feeling from everyone and the wider communities. Metatext is waaaaay better and replicates the Twitter experience much more closely. Mastodon is actually enjoyable with this app.
I advise picking through a bunch of apps to see which one is more suitable for you before settling on one to use.

reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:

👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.

Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration

As is tradition with any new social media account, I must post a cat photo, so here is one of our cat Jimmy 🐈‍⬛. We took him in from an animal shelter during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. He is an incredibly social cat, to the point where he is dog-like in his affection. He also does not meow, instead he chirps and chatters 🙂.
Waah its so unfair to be an incompetent billionaire making horrible decisions and ruining many people's lives. Those activists are so unfair making me loose revenue. Waah.
In lieu of anything interesting or academic for the time being, here’s Róisín enjoying the sun in Seville.

Hello!

I'm a historian of Atlantic World history (1500-1800), with an interest in interactions/processes involving Indigenous peoples and ppls of African descent.

I teach at Bryn Mawr College + live in Philadelphia.

If Twitter is a predicter of what I'll do here, I will be tooting about teaching, research/writing, my 3 kitties, the arts, tech, politics, and the 'Morse'-universe ('Morse,' 'Lewis,' and 'Endeavour.') :p

#introductions

Okay #histodons out there. I’m a global historian of slavery, the slave trade, #abolition and more recently #imperialism and #colonialism. I’m currently working on a book that examines the suppression of “piracy” at a global scale in the 19th century and that will be published by #YaleUniversityPress
Following the #Twittermigration, I’m looking forward to interacting with fellow historians, without having to put up with all the fascist trash that has taken over the bird’s site. #histodon
Hey #histodons, I'm a historian of science and animals in the early modern Spanish empire. I work on nautical science, navigation and (most recently) animal health on the Carrera de Indias. #histmed #histsci
