MeFite since 2018. I like graphs and bikes and cats and friendly internet strangers.

The more that I have tried to personally formalize my own feelings about LLMs (because I am anticipating having to have some extremely stressful conversations around their use in data journalism over the next few years), the more I keep thinking the word that best describes them is "corrosive."

The knowledge commons gets eroded, laundered, and spammed. Users' skills atrophy, along with their critical thinking. Labor is undermined. It may not be inherent to the tech itself, but the effect of all current implementations is to weaken the integrity of whatever they come in contact with.

I have a playlist of "classical mix" for studying and Different Trains came on.

I had to turn it off.

I've listened to Steve Reich's piece many dozens of times and contemplated the source of the sound samples. I've wondered if you can hear any difference in the whistles.

But a voice whispered in my ear. "It's not trains this time, is it?"

Sprawling warehouses. Is that a data center or is it a camp?

Either way, out of sight and out of mind.

Move over "who's on first"

"Looksmaxing is an aesthetic geared to the male gaze"
"IDK, straight dudes also play a role in it."
"Gaze, like looking."
"Mmm they do. But, so do straight people, come on."
"I'm not saying gays like gay people. I'm saying gaze like your eyes."
"Good. I'd hope they would. That's the whole point of this eyeliner."

It remains wild that all of these tools - MCP, OpenClaw, not just the entire AI stack but the entire ecosystem - don't think that security matters at all. Validation, sanitization, authentication, none of it. Call it 'autonomous' and yolo it out there for VC clout.

There's relearning the lessons of 90's computing, and then there's the lessons of 1850s London sanitation, of Roman-era waste management. Everyone just lets their cattle shit in the town well, it'll be fine.

In the wake of Jesse Jackson’s passing, MeFite Ghidorah remembers the power of Jackson’s simple, radical message: “I am somebody”

bert: ernie, i keep thinking about that dumb thing i said to maria last week. and then i start thinking about all the OTHER dumb things i've ever said

ernie: ooh, you're doing the thing! the suffering thing

bert: the WHAT thing?

ernie: see, bert, there's pain - that's when you stub your toe. but then there's suffering - that's when you stub your toe and spend three hours mad at the coffee table, the floor, gravity and yourself for having feet

bert: i KNEW feet were a mistake

ernie: the buddha called it the second arrow, bert! first arrow is the ouch. second arrow is all the stories you tell yourself ABOUT the ouch, bert

bert: so the dumb thing i said was arrow one

ernie: and the three a.m. replay marathon is arrow two! you're just shooting yourself over and over, bert. with your brain

bert: how do i stop?

ernie: you notice you're holding the bow

bert: that's it?

ernie: that's a lot, bert! most people don't even know they're armed

bert: so i just put down the bow?

ernie: or at least stop aiming at yourself. the coffee table's not coming after you. maria probably forgot. and your feet are doing their best

bert: my feet ARE doing their best

Hey Democrats: when you get a little win (Bovino), you don't stop and congratulate yourselves, you KEEP GOING
