Still learning how to use this platform.
I am over on BlueSky. It isn't perfect, but it is certainly much easier to use than Mastadon. Sorry this hasn't worked out. :(
Amid some dangerous and extremely disappointing statements from student organizations about Israel and Gaza, I am impressed that University of Ottawa law students from Muslim and Jewish student associations came together to make this thoughtful and united statement. While their statement leaves much unsaid, it is commendable that they focus on common ground, in shared pain and mutual respect.

Suggestion: Reach out to your local government, emergency service provider, and/or news org. Let them know that Twitter has ended public access to content and that Mastodon is a working alternative *today*. I did this on the weekend with my local emergency folks and this morning I got a reply back saying they had noticed the embedded Twitter feed on their webpage was broken.

They didn't realize Twitter had cut that service. Now, hopefully, they are considering their options including Mastodon.

There is so much bad news floating around out there that it makes every good thing seem pointless. But the thing is, there is also lots of good news floating around if only someone would report on it... like this!

Eating my first jianbing. I was going to go to Dunkin Donuts but wanted something different. Passed some other places but they didn't have eggs. These have eggs baked into the crepe part. Too much lettuce for me but I may try again with different fillings.
I did forget to describe it. I'll try to do better. This picture has an enormous silver chopping bowl filled with chopped up peeled apples. There is a wooden spoon in the bowl. 11 ounces of walnut pieces are in a white plastic bowl next to the apples. To the side is a just opened jar of truly amazing honey. In the foreground are cooking tools: chopping board, chopped, peeled, metal measuring chip. In the background are decorative bowls, figurines, and whatnot, mostly out of focus.
Made a lot of charoset yesterday. A lot!

So OpenAI just released a detector of AI-generated text, I assume because of concerns in education / homework.

https://openai.com/blog/new-ai-classifier-for-indicating-ai-written-text/

Maybe this is good?

No, it's very bad.

They claim 26% true positives, 9% false positives. Assume 10% of submitted homework is chatgpt generated, you get the classic counterintuitive outcome of poor predictive power: if a homework is flagged, there's a 3:1 chance it's *human* generated.

This is going to cause a lot of harm. It should be immediately recalled.

New AI classifier for indicating AI-written text

We’re launching a classifier trained to distinguish between AI-written and human-written text.

Let's say the Chinese government was using TikTok to surveil Americans.

If you ban Tik Tok, the Chinese gov can just legally purchase the same info from data brokers, because the US has almost no privacy laws.

Don't ban TikTok, pass a damn privacy law https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/01/opinion/tiktok-ban-china.html

Opinion | A Nationwide Ban on TikTok Won’t Make Us More Secure

A national ban on TikTok would not solve America’s data privacy problems.
