ST-TLS_NY_24_19_GUNDAM//COPACABANA (2024)

This is the second piece in the Street Tiles series. My source material comes from pictures of ad posters around the city, taken with my iPhone or my friend John’s Canon, to create these abstract volumes.

After months of mulling over how to summarize my work, it finally came to me while hanging out this week (thanks Jiemin!). My methods come from various personal sources, but the overarching theme has been my exploration of how commercial images have come to occupy the same space as identity within our memories. Among the fragments of our personal memories are brands, jingles, toy commercials, magazine images, Super Bowl ads, and similar content.

I always found it amazing how much intersection there was between my wife's childhood experiences and mine, despite growing up in two different countries with completely different contexts. The main connector was brands: Disney, Coca-Cola, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, etc.

These fragments of branding, so closely intertwined with things that define us in our own minds, raise questions about how much of our personal self-understanding has been influenced by Madison Avenue.
