What are the best resources for running a Mastodon / Fediverse instance?

The other advantage this new start here is giving me?

I can immediately mute the people coming in hot with self promotion, obsession over their follower count, and seeing this as a means to a marketing end.

That’s a good thing. I’ve had enough of that.

Super pleased to be here.

My colleague Julien Deswaef explains why organizations should run their own Mastodon server, so that they can control their own channel of communication

Interesting analysis of how things are getting tricky for Twitter in terms of system reliability - echoes a conversation I had over the weekend.. https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/08/1062886/heres-how-a-twitter-engineer-says-it-will-break-in-the-coming-weeks/
Here’s how a Twitter engineer says it will break in the coming weeks

One insider says the company’s current staffing isn’t able to sustain the platform.

The thing you have to remember about figures like Ted Cruz, Elon Musk, and a certain orange vulgarian is that they have zero shame in being so widely despised and revealed as hopeless incompetents. They refuse to learn. They truly cannot comprehend that they are capable of doing great wrong. When toxic masculinity merges with the "reality distortion field" described in Walter Isaacson's STEVE JOBS, you get men like this. And this is held up by many as a virtue!

Twitter 19 hours ago: “We’re not currently putting an ‘official’ label on accounts.”

Twitter 10 hours ago: “To combat impersonation, we’ve added an ‘official’ label to some accounts.

Right now: There’s still no official label on Twitter’s own account.

I actually remember Eternal September https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September and I am hoping that the difference between college students with little to no social media experience and those who have at least lived on Twitter for a while will make for a less jarring transition. I encourage all newbies to try to suss out your server's norms.
Eternal September - Wikipedia

A particularly catastrophic day at Twitter. The people reassuring advertisers yesterday that everything was fine quit, along with the heads of trust and safety, ad sales and most importantly the three people who were responsible for filing a document to the FTC detailing their protections in place for user data. Those three were the heads of information security, compliance and privacy. When they leave like that you know it’s bad. Law-breaking, privacy violating, insecure bad.
@edbennett @Chimoose Also use Debirdify at https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/ which allows you to find everyone you follow or who follows you, and generates a file for bulk upload into Mastodon.
Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.
