@BrandonHill I guess I have a more optimistic view on it. To play the system implies that bad actors have something to gain such as power or money. Kind of hard to acquire either of those with systems that are completely free. If one particular instance of Mastodon is run by shady people, people will flock to a more trust-worthy one.

@BrandonHill @mstfacmly You may want to read more into how Mastodon works. It's not really possible for "them" to pry because the code is open-source and each server is independently run. That's the beauty of it.

The point of using either Mastodon or Diaspora is to eliminate control of monolithic organizations. You can like FB all you want but it doesn't change the fact that they control what you see.
