@Chanders This was exactly my thought, there seem to be a LOT of advantages for organizations to run their own instances and handle verification that way.

@seattleiteleo I think John Scalzi made a salient point: Twitter's content producers are the product they are selling, not the customers they are marketing to. While there are still enough people willing to give them product for free, they don't have much incentive to pay anyone.
