Very tangential thought that inspired - this is part of why I hate "Originalism" as a judicial philosophy. As Justice Marshall explained, "it's a *constitution* we are expounding." Living organisms, like our country, can't be allowed to putrify.
(I also dislike "originalism" because it allows judges to be authors who self-insert themselves into the story as Framers.)
The new-community energy on Mastodon is fun. As I just mentioned on a thread by @hrheingold, it's always exciting at first. My high school history teacher told us that "today's reform is tomorrow's corruption."
But that doesn't mean that we should never embark on reforms. It means we can never stop reforming. Because old ways will rot or calcify.
As someone new to #mastodon, I've learned a lot over the last week.
I've written this blog post to try and capture what I've learned about Mastodon.
Nice article on the rise & fall of Foursquare & Gowalla back in 2009-2010. I guess I was a Foursquare enthusiast. I don’t remember how I came to stop using it. At some point, it was no longer helpful or interesting I guess.

The likelihood of anyone taking their cues for the West Lafayette school board race from information they find here is just about zero. However, I lost my own school board race in 2016 by four votes. So, just in case: vote for Springer, Witt, & Lyle!

All right, I don’t think linking the post that inspired mine worked very well. Because my thoughts weren’t closely enough related, without a preview, readers would likely expect the link to go to something about the Batavia.
Instead it’s a post about the VOC and Australia.
I’m not sure if you can quote a post & offer commentary. But I saw the linked post (below) about the Dutch East India sailors finding Australia. It reminded me of a great book I read earlier this year: “Batavia’s Graveyard” by Mike Dash.
The Batavia wrecked on a spit of land. One of the survivors with unorthodox religious views started a bit of a cult & led a group that murdered and subjugated for fun, sex, & profit.
