A harmless little old white-haired lady trying to turn late blooming into an art form.
Many commentators are tweeting & tooting that we need to expand the SCOTUS. That is not the answer to everything. Unless you just want a larger Court, not bound by ethics rules, engaging in the kind of behavior described in the NYT piece. What we need are guardrails - an understanding that the Court sits w/i our democracy. Our job us to strengthen it by creating the processes that promote impartiality & insulation from lobbying, not crossing our fingers & hoping for the best.
An experimental social media platform that allows users to moderate content and combat misinformation, via MIT researchers:

Empowering social media users to assess content helps fight misinformation

MIT researchers built a prototype social media platform to study the effects of giving users more agency to assess content for accuracy and control the posts they see based on accuracy assessments from others. Users were able to make accurate assessments, despite having no prior training, and they valued and utilized the assessment and filtering tools they designed.

Mastodon.lol is expensive to operate -- we've got servers, outbound email, translation, media storage, backup storage, monitoring. We're entirely community funded so if you're in a position to financially support the site please consider it!

We don't have ads, we don't track you or sell your data, we don't charge for features, and we don't even get paid to run it. All Patreon donations go towards operational costs, nothing more.

I joined this site a fortnight ago today.

I did not have a clue how it worked, or about its lore and culture.

Now, it seems intuitive - though not because I am adept but because networks and protocols are familiar and practical things.

We use them all the time: www, mobiles, emails, etc.

And this place is structured to encourage calm civility.

It was Twitter which was strange and, in many ways, inhumane - rewarding clicks and rage and vileness.

We just got used to it.

And now we are out.

Dear #FediAdmin   folk, please remember to take care of yourselves.

These are exciting times and it's fun to be a part of what's happening, to be sure. But this is a marathon, not a sprint.

It's okay…

✅ …to close registrations on your instance;
✅ …if your instance is a bit slower or experiences some hiccups;
✅ …if some of people from your instance flow somewhere else;
✅ …to decide to run a smaller instance.

Thank you for your work!

UPDATE: Mastodon accounts: 7,133,516 (estimate)

* 5,451 in the last hour
* 238,181 in the last day
* 548,368 in the last week

After a crazy jump all day today, it looks like sign-up are finally calming down to ~5,000/hour. Which is still a stunning amount of new users.

We (the Fediverse) need lots of funding to onboard these new users so donate to the admins of your instance as well as the Mastodon project. https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

NOTE: Will be actively blocking all concern trolls who reply.

The legacy of Twitter is such a complicated topic. It's difficult to parse out its influence.

I was recently chatting with another trans woman, and she emphasized that, for all the bad it has put out, the site has been a critical lifeline for isolated trans folks.

I've read similar for migrants, refugees, natural disaster victims, etc.

Our society has so failed marginalized communities that even this shitty website has been a blessing for them.

Food for thought.

A gentle reminder to folks who are new to Mastodon. In solidarity with those in the disabled community who rely on screen readers, we ask that you:

* Add alt text/image descriptions when you post media
* Capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag #LikeThis
* Avoid emojis in your display name

UPDATE: So many great questions! Please check the replies to see if your question has been asked and answered ❤️

What's it with people reporting every single person they dont like..

Please, stop with that.

This is not #Twitter. Please use features like mute or block if you don't like people but stop reporting otherwise I'll start banning people who keep reporting for nothing

I'm trying to keep things running with so many new people and it's such a waste of time to hear whatever you don't like

Otherwise go waste Elon's time, not mine

One of the dumbest things a smart person can do is to start thinking they’re smarter than everyone else.
