Another day, another violent mugging/assault witnessed from my kitchen window. The downside of having a 3rd floor apartment overlooking the streets of Oakland.
Changed my mind on Mastodon, it pretty much sucks. Migrating servers is too hard, and it doesn’t have the level of engagement that would justify all the effort.
Normal Sunday morning (taking the baby on a stroller walk while listening to Ether).
Have to admit, it’s a little weird seeing prominent walkable urbanism/transit advocates posting pics from their flight to a new international location every other month. Some forms of carbon footprint are just sexier than others, I guess.
They were doing the cleanup as part of MLK day. Yes, that’s right…a bunch of low income Black kids picking up TRASH OFF THE STREET to honor Dr. King. Just a wild perversion of the legacy of civil disobedience and the fight for justice. Needless to say, I didn’t include the photo in the brochure, and never felt the same way about the day of service stuff since. (End)
One property manager sent me a photo of kids doing neighborhood cleanup. It was the perfect photo op, but my heart sank when I saw it. (3/x)
In grad school I interned for an affordable housing advocacy org. My assignment was to make a brochure touting the benefits of affordable housing to the larger community. I reached out to nonprofit developers for photos and stories of civic engagement from the tenants.
Remember how for a while they tried to turn MLK day into a day of service? I have a small story about that…
I’ve gotten obsessed with cooking to an unhealthy degree lately. This weekend so far I’ve made crepes with lemon ricotta filling, buttermilk fried chicken, a baked oats and fruit dish, arugula salad, and five spice-glazed barramundi with broccoli. I have a 5 month old child and no dishwasher, send help.
She also said that Prop 13 is good because it protects low income homeowners.
