But they're not *stupid*. If you conversed they'd follow your arguments and make points tethered to a recognizable version of reality.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that these people don't have a lot of self-critical interiority. They don't think "What kind of person am I? What are my values? Am I upholding them? How would I rank against my heroes?"

A. G. Sulzburger is one of these - not stupid, just very invested in his own survival and the economic success of the NYT and totally fine with the end of democracy as long as he's placed to survive it. Bari Weiss is also one of these. She's way over her head at CBS, but she's not stupid.

We overuse stupid describing Trump enablers. A lot of people doing the grunt work of fascism are pretty stupid, certainly. A much smaller group are extremely intelligent and desire the end of US democracy/a phase shift to Christofascist government. But there's a third group, smart opportunists.
