I think I'm affiliated with CCCAC and am doing physics ...

I was planning on doing a shark flavored overview talk about the LHC and CMS experiment at c3 this year. Sadly, it was not accepted due to many other cool submissions.

But my trip to CERN was already planned and I had made arrangements with the PR department - So here are some of the images I took of special corespondent Blåhaj explaining things.

Hopefully next year is the charm. When LHC goes into the long shutdown I probably can also get some images of Blåhaj in the CMS experiment.

These four pictures were brought to you by four hours of swearing but at least the SEM works again and its oildiff has fresh oil.
After a year of work and crazy amount of help from a bunch of cool peoples my vacuum chamber is finally "finished". Its almost fully assembled but I have no idea it its air tight. Lets see how many round trips back to the workshop it will take before its really done. (Blahaj for scale)

A curious cat that came up to us on our visit to Middelburg.

There were two new probable gravitational-wave events in the past two days. If they are real, both came from mergers of binary black holes.

1️⃣ S251013x on 13 October at a distance of around 12 billion light-years. If the masses of the two black holes were equal, they were between around 25 and 100 solar masses. More info: https://gracedb.ligo.org/superevents/S251013x/view/

2️⃣ S251014cn on 14 October at a distance of around 2 billion light-years. If the masses of the two black holes were equal, they were between around 6 and 25 solar masses. More info: https://gracedb.ligo.org/superevents/S251014cn/view/

Fifteen years of radio observations yielded this amazing view down the throat of a black hole.

We're looking into a jet of plasma shooting out from a supermassive black hole, called PKS 1424+240. The lines depict intense magnetic fields threaded through the jet.

For anybody who needs to know: This is how a hit of a particle in a scintillator would look like if there were a lot more photons and if humans hat ps time perception.

The average number of photons which would actually reach a human eye at 10cm distance is ~95.

The simulation is a 1GeV muon hitting a 13cmx13cmx5cm plastic scintillator, as seen in the sketch.

The photons were accumulated for 0.5Million of those hits ~700GiB of Data :)
