AoIR drop! Blogged for CAMRI #universityofwestminster about attending @AoIR conference for the first time: got inspired by innovative studies into Meta advertising and period apps; felt welcomed into the digital media community; went on a bumper car. Heart and head was very happy throughout: https://camri.ac.uk/blog/articles/aoir-drop-my-first-time-attending-association-of-internet-researchers-2024-at-the-25th-anniversary-conference/

AoIR drop: my first time attending Association of Internet Researchers 2024 at the 25th anniversary conference - CAMRI

By DEBBIE BALL, CAMRI DOCTORAL RESEARCHER Although it was my first time at Association of Internet Researchers and my first time at a digital media conference, I won’t start with with me stepping off the train at Sheffield, wide-eyed and fresh-faced embarking on the latest part of my academic journey. Instead, I felt a sense […]

"Overall, it’s incredibly heartening to join an early researcher community who share the same concerns about technology’s multiple and widespread effects on society, the details of which can become heavy, despairing and disempowering."

ICYMI my blog about turning early career researcher challenges into successes thanks to the @digitalgoodnet summer school is now up on University of Westminster's CAMRI site and in their newsletter ✨

On the eve of #AoIR2024, I wrote a thoughtful piece on how attending the first
@digitalgoodnet summer school helped me to become more confident talking about my PhD work in persuasive design features.

Happily repping CAMRI at
University of Westminster as always, please check out the blog here: https://digitalgood.net/learning-and-growing-following-the-digital-good-network-summer-school-by-debbie-ball/

Bit behind with my #AoIR2024 posts...but take that as a good sign that I've had a busy, enjoyable and interesting @AoIR conference.

The Place of a Child on Platforms and the Data and Tracking panels were fascinating this morning. Big ups to @tamaleaver, @taylorannabell, @TomDivon and @wishcrys for the former and @antmandan for the latter 👏 👏 👏

Yesterday at #AOIR2024 was great & gave my brain a very good workout.

I enjoyed Brady Robards presentation a lot about young people’s attitudes to unhealthy Instagram advertising. Then the excellent States, Platforms & AI w Thomas Poell, Lina Dencik, @stinelomborg & @markandrejevic

Took part in some incredible #AOIR2024 workshops and talks yesterday by Platform Governance Archive. It is also true that this conference is super friendly and welcoming! Snapshot from @nik's @AoIR opening talk from the plenary last night
Excited for the @AoIR pre-conference workshop in archiving at Uni of Sheffield. Here we go 🙌 #AoIR2024
To post or not to post? I spoke to
@guardian about how we’re all social media experts and yet today’s digital landscape is dicey, esp when expressing political views. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/jan/22/the-big-idea-should-we-keep-politics-out-of-social-media
The big idea: should we keep politics out of social media?

Where is the line between raising awareness and feeding polarisation?

Day 1 of the @digitalgoodnet summer school. What a pleasure to spend two days talking about how we can change the digital landscape for the better. Shoutout to
Łukasz Szulc for an inspiring talk about Feminist and Queer Manifestos for Digital Utopias
