@ben I often feel like many people took the wrong lesson from the internet eating everything. Even if something does end up being the future (and of course we see many more false alarms than actual transformations), I’m not convinced that it’s always better to be early to the game. Speed matters but maybe not as much as more fundamental things. For every Amazon there are plenty of Webvans.
I get selling benefits not features, but that rests on credibility. If all you tell me is “build faster so you can focus on what matters,” I don’t automatically believe you can deliver more time — but I do see you’re starting by making me read a page and a half to figure out what your product does
@scottjenson Some the LLMs have gotten *so* good at the lower level mechanics that I’m almost more worried now about issues like ones with nearly self-driving cars. If I get in the habit of taking my hands off the wheel, it’s harder to get oriented if I do need to step in (or even notice something’s gone horribly wrong to begin with)
@ben I especially agree with your points about a “default” VIP instance and work on discoverability. These feel like big initial user experience speedbumps for many people
@jalefkowit perhaps it would be nearer the truth to say our armored combat vehicles seem to have lost us
@jalefkowit I would hope but this point both Automattic and WP Engine have people in the room clearly making the point that no one is coming out of this looking good and almost any action will make it worse because, as you say, any escalation (justifies or not) cuts to the very core of that stability that’s one of WordPress’s biggest selling points (even if it’s not the most exciting one)
@ben having worked on perhaps more than my share of videos, it struck me that the document starts drawing a distinction from conventional production (“we are not Hollywood”) and then goes on to describe at length skills and practices that I would expect to be table stakes for any moderately experienced person in the industry. The whole thing leaves me with a feeling of unnecessary reinvention (there are also better paths to reliable production than haranguing staff to care more).
@picardtips Want to multiply human capability? I’ll see whatever’s hot in AI and raise you plenty of sleep and some time outside
Would I have more time to code if I had someone else handle the bulk of support and just escalate a few tickets as needed? Probably. But often even easily resolvable tickets give great insight into how people are actually using features and how they could be improved. I built this tool for myself, but there are so many approaches and perspectives that I feel like I'd be missing out by not getting into the details first hand.
@ben as we saw with platforms that are essentially content/attention marketplaces, it’s entirely possible to eke out some wins, but as you said the goals are not aligned and in the long term the house always wins
