A blog about software craft and quality

Hello Fediverse! Any #ESO #ElderScrollsOnline players out there who are, like me, excited about the upcoming new Seasons/Tomes and would like some nerdy, upbeat, Tamriel-loving casual player types to get together with for group activities?

Holler at me if so!

How I built Timeframe, our family e-paper dashboard - Joel Hawksley

Over the past decade, I've worked to build the perfect family dashboard system for our home, called Timeframe:

“I believe our website is a necessity in our current political climate. It should have existed before, when I and millions of other girls who grew up playing games were made to feel out of place by #media and advertising that was laser-focused on teenage boys.“

🎮 Zoe Hannah and Maddy Myers founded "The Mothership", a #feminist gender and identity-focused, subscription-based #gaming publication.

Why I’m launching a feminist video games website in 2026

I’ve been a games journalist since 2007, but still there isn’t much video games coverage that feels like it’s specifically for people like me. So I’m creating a home for it: Mothership

I’m excited to share a little project of mine: GoLight Energy - an iOS app for people in Europe who want to see how green their local electricity is! You can get it on the App Store today: https://apps.apple.com/app/golight-energy/id6755192452

It works like a traffic light:

🟢 Use energy when it’s green.

🔴 Hold off when it’s red.

A small shift in timing, such as when you cook or charge your car, can help increase renewable usage and reduce reliance on coal and gas.

Building this was a great chance to dive deeper into SwiftUI from the other side, exploring advanced scrolling APIs and designing with Liquid Glass!

Huge thanks to the team at Fraunhofer ISE behind Energy-Charts (@energy_charts_d). Their API powers the app, and their website (https://energy-charts.info) is fantastic for those interested in grid data and renewables!

Given everything happening right now, I updated this article with options for weather apps, web forms, and translation services — along with some tweaks to existing categories.

I hope it helps your transition off US tech!

Getting off US tech: a guide

I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.
